Hello. I’m a yellow-throated vireo. You probably won’t recognize my face. Number twenty-four of forty, another flightless curio pinned to the wall inside a case. Pinning up my wings wasn’t what got me Poking out my eyes — not that mean The absolutely worst part, if you ask me? I’d die a thousand times just to be seen. I’d die a thousand times just to be seen. Crowds. There used to be buzz. Bright-eyed young students who cared who I was. My daddy got a diorama. Brother’s in a book. Mother’s head was mounted with a golden hook. The line for Auntie Norma left everybody wide-eyed Me, they look askance, as if my tits were tie-died. Oh, forget the loudmouth lark from Long Island Never mind Manhattan’s stuck-up stork. Give Brooklyn and the Bronx their pooping pigeons. I’m the biggest boid in New York City Area, I was biggest boid in New York! (pause) C Children run right past me To see the big blue whale To get a visitor a day is pretty rare. Am Since the T-Rex came Em/C The traffic pattern’s changed. Dm G I’ve fallen into disrepair. C E7 I can long for an iPad til my feathers start to flake F G C and dust grows inches thick on my derriere (which it has) Am Em It’s get me sad. Glass is so opaque. Dm F I’m here but not actually here. Am G F I’m here but not actually here C The day that someone stops /F# The day that someone sees FM7 G C And registers some genuine delight… Am “Mommy, look! A bird. E/C She’s from Jersey, just like me!” Dm G is the day I’ll taste the glory that’s my right! Gonna be crowds! There’s gonna be buzz! Bright-eyed young students who care who I was. F G C A7 One day I’ thrust my best wing forward F G C A7 and puff my chest up to size F E7 Am D Finally I’m done being ig-nore-ed Dm7 G7 When ya look me straight in my glass eyes . F G C A7 Forget the loudmouth lark from Long Island Dm7 G C A7 Never mind Manhattan’s stuck-up stork. F E7 Am D9 Brooklyn and the Bronx have got their pigeons. Dm G C A7 I’ll be the biggest boid in New York City Area, Dm7 G C I’ll be biggest boid in New York! F Fm If they can spend a million bucks to reconstruct a wing, C/E A7 At least have the decency to let a bird sing! C Hello. /F# I’m a yellow-throated vireo. Dm7 G C You probably won’t recognize my face.
